Your best bet is to call them in advance and ask them.

We have some old gaming systems that we don’t use anymore and have been trying to decide what to do with them. I wonder if a recycling place would take the cords?

I’m sorry, but we do not buy old wiring. Do an internet search for “buyers of old electrical wiring” and see if you find a local buyer.

Thanks, Ann. I agree that recycling hasn’t become as effective as it could be – and it’s certainly not where to start with dealing with the problem: stemming overconsumption is, followed by manufacturing more durable products made from safer ingredients and materials. But there are some recycling services that pay. For example, my utility company paid me $50 to pick up and recycle my old refrigerator, plus an additional $100 for replacing the old one with a more efficient model. I recently “recycled” some dining room chairs via Craig’s List – to someone who paid me $150 for them. I do think we need to look to our own borders rather than China or somewhere to ship off our trash. Buy less, use what you buy as long as possible, and recycle it (or get it to another user) when you can’t use it anymore.

They may pay for shipping fee for you to send them the stuff. Most of the times you have to pay shipping plus recycling fee. These companies have to stay in business, and they have to pay for labor & equipment and rent factories to do the work. That’s why the US used to ship a lot of e-waste overseas to lower the cost of recycling. And China, in turn, has banned the US and other countries from shipping e-waste to them. Diane, we are 30 years into this recycling movement and we still haven’t made a dent to the problem. Our consuming habit is what put us into this, and only changing that habit will fix this. Yes, you can sell old stuff on Ebay. But some stuff is simply unsalable because it is decrepit and useless, to the point that it may even be unrecyclable, or expensive/unfeasible to recycle. I mean, we can’t even recycle a piece of paper if it is stained with coffee or ketchup.

I’ll be surprised if anyone will pay you to recycle your computer, but if you donate it to a non-profit, you may be able to take a tax deduction. Good luck.
